Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Box Elder County Fairgrounds to oppose the project at a county commission hearing, and a separate demonstration drew crowds to the Utah State Capitol itself.

The pressure was substantial enough that it drew a public letter from Stuart Adams, the Republican leader of the Utah Senate — not exactly the profile of a typical anti-corporate activist — warning that the scale of the project as proposed was untenable.
